Search Engine Optimization(SEO)
Prudent use of the Eight Simple Rules will do wonders towards boosting a site's profile and standing with the search engines. Prudent is the word, however. Resist the temptation to stuff a site with keywords, links, and bloated meta tags. These well-meaning efforts are considered by the search engine spiders to be "spam", and spamming is severely frowned upon by the fussy spiders. Once a site has been blacklisted for spamming, there's no way to appeal and no one to appeal to. Let's look at some common mistakes site designers make. Avoiding them will ensure your site soars like an eagle... instead of sinking like a turkey. · Extra keywords. Search engine spiders, to put it mildly, have a low tolerance for BS. They can "tell" if a site designer is trying to bend the rules, for example by including a rambling mass of keyword rich copy that doesn't make much sense. Play nice, or pay the price
· Hidden text. The next time you're surfing the web and notice a web page with an empty area near the bottom of the page, move your mouse over it with the right button held down. You'll likely be highlighting "invisible text", which is usually a bunch of keywords in the same color font as the page background. Clever, huh? Not! Humans can't see the text but search engine spiders aren't human
They also have no sense of humor, so don't be a wise guy
Cloned pages. Once upon a time, a clever webmaster came up with the idea of creating multiple copies of his web site. He gave them all different file names, and then submitted them to the search engines. Unfortunately for him, he was too clever for his own good since the spiders are programmed to notice site duplication. Every copy of his site was blacklisted. Search engine spiders will also note duplicate title tags and consider them to be intentional spamming. · Patience is a virtue
Submitting a site to the same search engine more than once every day is considered spamming. It's easy enough to find out how high-ranking sites have achieved their enviable positions on the front pages. Most browsers allow the user to view a web page's Source Code. It's as if KFC included a recipe and ingredients list with every order of their fried chicken. So much for the "secret herbs and spices", there are no secrets on the Internet. By observing a competitor's web page code, their keywords, title tags, and so on are revealed. There's no shame in learning from the best (and no way for them to stop someone from doing so)
These do's and don'ts are the essence of search engine optimization
These do's and don'ts are the essence of search engine optimization
Putting them into practice will result in your web site rising to the top ranks of the search engines like a bubble in a soda bottle. This isn't about prestige, it's about money... a high ranking virtually guarantees high sales volume due to the exponential increase in site traffic. To paraphrase the oft-quoted line from "Field of Dreams", "if you build it right, they will come"... and if they come, they'll buy
